it's obviously bird fashion week up on your roof! ; ) and speaking of "edgy": this one's a spiffy (and quite feminine) dresser, too! polka-dot dress with a little black "bib" – nice! soon he'll grow the red moustachial stripe at the base of his beak, though, and look a little more masculine! ; ) now does that sound pretentious? yes, i guess. but i'd never seen this kind of bird before and so i googled him, wanting to find out whether he's a woodpecker or not, and i found a nice wikipedia entry… with his long insect-eater's beak and those powerful claws, one turned backwards, he seems perfectly suited for bark food searches and a safe climb up a high tree! plus, i agree with renate: such a great shot in just the split of a second! love the sunshiny and still surprisingly green background, too! hugs, sabine.

A very impressive record of this in your area not rare bird. Congratulations!
To my knowledge is the Northern Flicker a large woodpecker and are found year-round in most of the continental United States, Mexico and central coastal British Columbia.
