Togo is much like the rest of the slave coast with its usual European influence. In the late 1800's the Germans explored Togo and established a German protectorate.

Benin was known as Dahomey when it was a French colony. Before colonization most of the population was grouped into kingdoms ruled by a royal family. Benin is also know as the cradle of Voodoo.
