The village was built in the 1840's - to mine, and to smelt, local iron ore. The iron industry closed about 20 years later.
The road is the A68 - which follows the line of the old Roman Road which went north from the River Tyne , over the cheviot hills, to the fort, Trimontium - near modern-day Melrose in Scotland.
