A colored hackney in front of the Friday Mosque
The Friday Mosque of Herat or called Masjid e Jami in Farsi language, is one of the oldest mosques in Afghanistan. the mosque was not always the largest mosque in Herat; a much larger complex also built by the Timurids, the Mosque and Madressa of Gawharshad, was located to the north. Those architectural monuments were dynamited by officers of the British Indian Army under British supervision in 1885.
I could enter into the mosque and visit the inside yard but coldn't capture any pictures.
Although it was wintertime during my tour to Afghanistan, the weather mostly was tolerably mild; snow melts as it falls, and even on the mountains did not lie long. In Herat I enjoyed sunny hours when I walked around the ancient city.
Please bear in mind again that all these pictures are scans of old slides, and not all of them are in good condition, the foreground isn't very sharp. But it is a memory for my travel in Afghanistan and a memory for the pre-war time when Herat was a destination for many tourists interested in culture, people and historic places.
