The castle Bourtzi in the sea

Nafplio was one of the first cities to fall in Greek hands in Independance war (1821-1828) and it was also the first capital when Greece was liberated in 1828 before Athens took over in 1834. The castle (Bourtzi) was built by the Venetians (1534) during their first occupation of the city in order to reinforce the city's defence against the Ottomans.
