Topnaar Boy (Namibia)

Many children, living in the barren and remote regions of our Namib Desert, have never been exposed to camera's or pictures of themselves, this little boy, of the Topnaar tribe, was one of them. He was so eager to pose and loved running over to see the image in the back of my camera. I took this photograph in the stark heat of the midday winter sun, this allowed me to get the boys face well exposed because the simmering white sand reflected against his dark skin to create a lovely soft illumination. I used a wide aperture to allow the background to fade away into the distance and at the same time it over exposed the white desert sands to create the perfect contrast for the subject of the boy.
