First, I appreciated so much your worlds "I've also made numerous mistakes and missteps and I hope to learn from them someday!" I think you should be proud of them, really proud.
As surely you know after reading my page on FC, I'm also a writer. What you maybe don't know is that my first camera, in 1972, was a black Asahi Pentax Spotmatic, a very strong, mechanical camera.
I'm now buying a Canon 5D and some canon lenses.
I was born in 1950 so, I'm a little bit older than you, just a little bit..:-)
