Castro Marim Castle

One of the oldest places in the Algarve. Castle is situated in a top point and once dfended the village port and was constructed over the old castle, probably a Musulman construction.
The Castle took a strategic position protecting the Portuguese coast on south of the Moors, which stayed here for centuries till the Christians expelled them in 1242. The Castle is a part of a remarkable edification of border fortifications.

In this image we can see the former church entrance and on the background the modern bridge from 2002 over the Guadiana river and border to Spain.
