Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece with over a million inhabitans and capital of the region of Macedonia. Founded in 315 BC by Kassandros, the Macedonian husband of Alexander the Great 's illegitimate sister Thessaloniki, the city quickly expanded at the Hellenistic period(following the death of Alexander) but mainly during the thousand years period of the Byzantine Empire becoming the most important seaport and multi-ethnic metropolis after Constantinople. During this period the city was fortified with strong walls. decorated with multiple monuments, churches, mosaics and frescoes still visited and admired from all over the world. Thessaloniki continued to thrive even after the Ottoman ocupation of Constantinople in 1453 being the most important city after the capital Istambul for the nearly five centuries of Ottoman rule..At the end of 19th century and early beginning of 20th the city was thriving in trade, commerce and political importance much more than the capital of Athens housing a multi-ethnic population of Greeks, Turks,Jews,Armenians, Egyptians, Libanese and rest Europeans . Thessaloniki was eventually passed from Ottomans to Greeks in 1912 during the liberation wars of 1912-13 The city still bears imposing byzantine wall relics, is full of Roman, Byzantine Paleochristian monuments and churches,Sephardic Jewish structures as well as islamic mosques, fountains and baths and has been declared as UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. Among street photographers, the historic center and the old town of Thessaloniki are considered the most popular destination for street photography in Greece..
