A Byzantine Lady in Waiting....6

Thessaloniki West
The West part of the city- historically her main entrance- has remained well behind in modernization and developping higher standards of social and cultural achievements. During the evolutionary process of the city and being near the busy port, it was the part first to accept and accomodate the main bulk of newcomers storming from provinces,mainly agricultural, in search for decent jobs and better living. Thus, securing accomodation near the port was convenient and most reasonable thing to do as this offered better chances for work. Thus this area was met with rapid and uncontrollable expansion and in the same time,it has remained the heart of economical and industrial activity especially in the rising and middle 20th century. Also a great bulk of arriving Jews and prosecuted by the Turks Armenians was added to their already existing and thriving communities, thus substantially contributing for a rapidly expanding trade and investment center. Cultural, educational and architectural interests remained underated as expected.

Resuming the photo documentary, taking a photo from a reasonably high level of the city, I was aiming to show this "entanglement" of city and port together with a sense of what I mean by the underated part of the city
Of course, situation keeps changing eternally and,certainly, this is not modern Thessaloniki....
