After the Matatah ceremony

When puberty begins, it becomes painful; the tooth filing (Matatah) is another rite of passage in the life of a Balinese. A priest grinds down the four upper incisors and the canines, which are considered animalistic, evenly.
But the filing itself is now usually only mentioned in order to keep the young people's teeth healthy and it isn't as much painful as the years before.
