From our analytical examination - we are able to confirm that the white
spots are caused by gel lumps that are present on the surface of the film.
Such gel lumps are however present on all batches and all products. When
films are used in the standard photographic way (printed in an enlarger by
transmission - as opposed to being scanned) - these gel lumps present
absolutely no problems. They do not reproduce on any of the prints made.
However - as is brought to our attention by this customer - when such
negatives are scanned, it would appear that the gel lumps do then lead
result in white spots being present.
This appears to have been worsened as the images appear to have been scanned
at the highest possible resolution.
Clearly the nature of the way conventional films are now being used is
gradually changing (ie with digital becoming more prominent) - it is
probable that there is an increase in people scanning films. However, to
date - this is actually the first complaint of its type.
I have however - assigned a Not Justified verdict, as no replacement media
would eradicate this problem for the customer. Also, because - as mentioned
above, the problem is not an issue when films are used as they are designed
chiefly to be used ie printed through transmission - as opposed to being
scanned.
The customer can be assured that we are now treating this issue seriously
and acknowledging that we need to understand the issue alot more, and react
to it. (Mike Gristwood is organising some testing of a range of batches, and
will also be organising some competitive testing as currently we are unable
to clarify if in any case this would happen with any manufacturers films. We
also need to try different scanners).
Investigation findings will not be quick, and any resulting changes
necessary are only likely to be extremely long term (ie if formulations have
to be changed - to reduce gel lump size for example, or for example to find
a way to stop current sized gel lumps from being present on film surface).
By the way - we did also note that the customers images were being immensely
enlarged (in scans) and at very high scanner resolution - this too is
possibly contributing to the gel lump spots then being more noticeably
visible.
