Im 17. Jahrhundert galt die Herzog August Bibliothek als die größte Bibliothek nördlich der Alpen und wurde als achtes Weltwunder bezeichnet. Gegründet wurde die Bibliothek in der Residenzstadt Wolfenbüttel durch Herzog Julius zu Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1528–1589), der während seines Studiums um 1550 in Frankreich begann Bücher zu sammeln.
