Island of Virgin Mary.

Greece Aegean Sea Cyclades island of Tenos
Tenos is a tiny Cycladean island with more churches than trees.....It is called the island of Virgin Mary with an imposing church dedicated to her and which also houses the sacred icon of Virgin Mary.Every year, on the 15th of August, the island nearly sinks from worshippers from all parts of the country who come to pray on the Holy icon and beg for the blessing of the Virgin.Tradition speaks also for miracles...
In the photo a typical shot of island's bare landscape with one of the inummerables churches...Again one can see how the poor locals try to exploit every bit of fertile land creating those small farms on the steep rocky slopes.

one can only sigh with disbelief and awe, when imagining the effort and agony the people must have put into trying to cultivate and farm that land! what an extreme example of making the best of what you have, no matter how surreal and illusory it may seem… great capture, as always, alexander! love the somwhat uncompromising light, and how, with every fiber of its miserable being, the entire rock seems to be striving DOWN DOWN DOWN. but stubbornly the settlers, farmers, worshippers won't let it go! greetings, sabine.

It is such a barren, rocky place that it does beg the question as to why anyone would wish to live here in the first place. I went to oogle Earth and took a look...It really is as barren and inhospitable as it looks here.
