In der Regenzeit zwischen Mai und Ende Oktober schwillt der Tonle Sap in Kambodscha alljährlich zum größten Süßwassersee Südostasiens an. Grund: Die Niederschläge in der Monsunzeit und das Schmelzwasser aus den umliegenden Gebirgen lassen den Wasserstand des Mekong gewaltig ansteigen.
Die Bewohner der Gebiete rund um den Tonle Sap haben sich mit den alljährlichen Überschwemmungen arrangiert. Ihre Häuser errichten sie auf meterhohen Pfählen, damit sie in der Regenzeit nicht weggespült werden.

Every year in the rainy season between May and the end of October, the Tonle Sap in Cambodia swells to become the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Reason: The precipitation in the monsoon season and the melt water from the surrounding mountains cause the water level of the Mekong to rise enormously.
The residents of the areas around the Tonle Sap have come to terms with the annual floods. They erect their houses on meter-high poles so that they are not washed away in the rainy season.
