Milos island

Milos is one of the most beautiful and most challenging to visit greek island. It belongs to the complex of Cyklades and its history extends in the pre-hestoric depths much earlier than the Minoan and Mecenian civilizations. As many other greek islands is of volcanic origin, being always rich in minerals and precious stones. Famous is the "Melian earth" used by notable ancient painters as Apellis for extracting colurs and many other minerals were used for weapons and everyday utensils.Famous also were ornamental vases and goldsmiths produced there and exported.
From the early historic ages the island has been, for its importance, a military target especially between Athenians and Spartans than passed in Macedonian, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman posession till 1821 finally liberated during the greek war od independance(1821-1828).
Apart from inumerable wonderful beaches suitable to every taste the island is biggish and very challenging with interesting places to explore. In 1820 the famous statue of Afrodite was found by a farmer ploughing his farm who found it convenient to use it as an extention to his fence until, finally, was spotted by the local Ottoman authorities who hastily and secretly sold it to French archaeologists that smuggled it out and transferred it to Louvros museum. During the hastily and inappropriate smuggle both hands of Afrodite have been lost and never found.

In the photo one of the many rocky shores of the island that can be reached during a very pleasant sea tour around the island...
