Greek Independence Day is a National holiday celebrated annually in Greece on the 25th of March commemorating the start of the Greek Independence war(1821-1828)
After the end of a desperate eight years struggle against the Ottoman state, Greece emerged independent but ,yet, very weak and fragile after 400 years of Ottoman rule. That particular moment, a temporary Assembly elected, quite reasonably, the greek nobleman and notable diplomat Capodistria- former foreign minister of Russian Tzar Alexander Ist- as governor. Capodistria arrived in Greece at the beginning of 1928 and installed his first government in the island of Aegina and later in the city of Naflion which also became the first greek capital as Athens was only a rather insignificant village full of archaeology but hardly reflecting security and military readiness. Capodistria, for three years,proved a great political figure and reformer widely respected and loved by the people uplifting a country almost in ruins but hated by the upper class of the rich landlords that wanted to retain priviledges at the expense of poor people eventually succeeding in his assassination in 1831. A really black date in greek history.
Nafplion is one of the most beautiful greek cities, a great tourist center in our days with plenty of historic monuments full of documentary evidence of modern greek history. The most interesting part of the city is the Old Town, the real heart of the city.
Athens became capital of Greece in 1934 under king Otto, the first sovereign monarch of Greece.
