Night Trains No.8 - Northbound Amtrak "Palmetto" Entering Washington D.C.

It is shortly after 8 PM on a June evening, as Amtrak's "Palmetto" rumbles across
the Maine Avenue overpass, entering Southwest Washington on its way to Union Station.

The train, part of Amtrak's Silver Service of long distance trains, originated in Savannah, Georgia and is heading for
New York. A few minutes ago, it crossed the broad Potomac River on the Long Bridge and continued across the parallel Washington Channel on another span. After passing through the L'Enfant Plaza complex in SW Washington, the train will curve north and tunnel its way under Capitol Hill into the lower level of Union Station. There, its P42DC diesel-electric locomotive will be replaced by an ACS-64 "Sprinter" high-speed electric locomotive for the continuation of its journey, up the Northeast Corridor to New York's Penn Station.

Seen here, the "New River" Viewliner sleeper, followed by a string of Amfleet coaches.
