out for shopping...
Aegean Sea, Cyklades, Island of Andros
In the island of Andros a lady is just coming out for her daily shopping. Andros was considered one of the most thriving and rich islands among Cyclades with a very ancient and extremely high leveled civilization reaching it's climax between 3000 to 2000 BC. During the Ottoman captivation the island flourished again because of the rich sea merchants that also helped financially the Greek uprise in 1821.In the recent years-20th century- quite few of well known Greek ship owners were of Andros origin, among them Goulandris who financed the foundation of a splendid museum on the island that houses priceless items of the ancient Cycladean civilization that have been found in excavations.
Nowadays, Andros is among the Greek islands with beautiful houses of old rich sea merchants that their...poor descendants struggle to preserve without the least, of course, assistance from the state...

an elderly silhouette walking timidly out from the cool marble of her history-laden "mausoleum/tomb" towards the blue door of heaven – or so it seems… beautifully captured, alexander! an image of great symbolic value and with a strong message!! greetings, sabine. p.s.: enjoyed reading your info, too!Edgar B. 14/02/2014 10:15
This photo and the story underneath makes me feel visiting Andros.I used to spend long time holydays on Peleponnes. A little fishing village in former times was my ambition. But since the 1980th it is full of tourists with all the rubbish beside - a spoiled spot now!
Best regards

A beautiful picture with great use and management of the light. The story you tell of the rise and fall of this wonderful sounding place is the same for many ancient and beautiful places...no-one feels the need to preserve and care for the old....buildings or people.....and so they are left to go to ruins.... So sad.
