Pra Pathom Chedi (1) - Nakorn Pathom
Phra Prathom Chedi, Nakhon Prathom Province, is one of the largest pagoda in the world, and Thailand's oldest place of worship. It was built in the days of King Asoka, who sent missionaries to propagate the Buddhist faith in this part. Archeological scholars unanimously agree that Monk Sonathera and Monk Utrathera, the missionaries, first made Nakhon Pathom their base of religious propagation around the 3rd Buddhist century.
Originally the pagoda was built as an Indian-style stupa in the shape of an upside down bowl. Subsequently, the shape was changed after restorations.
Pra Pathom Chedi is about 120 meters high and surrounded by viharas and porches.
The great pagoda is the place of enshrinement of the Lord of Buddha's remains which are respected by Buddhists all around the world.
Speziell an religioesen Feiertagen kommen tausende von Besuchern (meistens von Bangkok) um dort zu beten aber auch um sich die Zukunft lesen zu lassen.

@ Monika - Danke fuer Deinen Kommentar. Ist ja schon eine Weile her das Du dort warst :-) mein erster Besuch war 1967. Es hat sich in Nakorn Pathom und vor Allem in Bangkok SEHR SEHR viel getan. Du solltest mal wiederkommen. Thailand ist noch immer schoen. Ich lebe ja nun schon lange hier.@ Eva - Danke fuer Deinen Kommentar. Uebrigens der Platz vor dem Chedi wird jeden Aben als "Night Market" benutzt - Essen, Essen und mehr Essen wird dort angeboten vom gegrillten Huehnchen bis zur "fliegenden Eiskrem" gibt es Alles was man sich denken kann.

wunderbar, er ist immernoch so schön.War 1969 dort unterwegs, damals mit dem Auto nach Nepal und dann mit dem Flugzeug weiter nach Bangkok.
Eine tolle Stadt.
