Scales and Spikes --- Pholiota squarrosa (WEIGEL : FR.) P. KUMM.

The picture of a shaggy scalycap (Pholiota squarrosa (WEIGEL : FR.) P. KUMM.), which is a mushroom of the Strophariaceae family within the classic mushrooms (Agaricomycetes). It possesses a weak poison but was thought to be edible in older times. The fungus is found on deciduous trees, no matter if dead or alive, and is a typical white-rot fungus. These white-rots are able to degrade lignin, one of the most complex and difficult to process plant compounds. Without these fungi, no wood would decay, and stored nutrients would be lost forever. These fungi have one of the most underrated and important roles in the forest!
