Die Karde sieht aus wie eine Distel, ist es aber nicht, sondern gehört in eine eigene Pflanzenfamilie.
Früher wurden die getrockneten, stacheligen Kardenköpfe zum Karden (Kämmen) der Wolle benutzt, eine wichtige Vorbereitung vor dem Spinnen zu Garn.
Als Heilpflanze ist die Karde relativ unbekannt. Durch die Fähigkeit ihrer Wurzel gegen Borreliose zu helfen, gewinnt die Karde jedoch zunehmend an Bedeutung.
