the grief stricken emperor

North India The Taj Mahal mausoleum in Agra.
Taj Mahal in Agra is a white marble mausoleum built from 1632 to 1653 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan that was grief stricken by the death of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal during the birth of his 14th child. At the inauguration ceremony he also recited his poem:
Should guilty seek asylum here,
Like one pardoned, he becomes free of sin
Should a sinner make his way to this mansion
All his past sins are to be washed away
The site of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs
And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes
In this world this edifice has been made
to display there by the creator's glory.
The monument is an exquisite piece of islamic architecture universally admired as a masterpiece of world's heritage. In 1983, Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage site.
