Vucciria Palermo: collapsed buildings, the Municipal Administration closes roads

Sicily, 2014 - Palermo

At 21:30 on 5 February 2014 took yet another collapse of one of the dilapidated buildings of the "Vucciria" of Palermo. Miraculously there were no casualties. In fact Garraffello Square, which is one of the places of the old center of Palermo, where there are the most prestigious buildings in the city (Palazzo Rammacca. Palace Mazarin. Palazzo del Duca della Grazia, the Loggia dei Catalani), and where in the evening and at night love to meet many young people, both on the street and in clubs and pubs more or less improvised, at the time of the collapse was strangely deserted, except for a pickup truck used as a walking Sandwiches, was completely destroyed, while the restaurateur, who had left to follow TV to a football game, it was so unharmed.
The Municipal Administration has therefore decided, for safety reasons, to close all access roads to the square of the dam walls, between the strong protests of the few inhabitants of the area, the operators of the premises on the ground floors of the newly born and old unsafe buildings, and the many associations that fight for years for the recovery of the ancient city.
The intention announced by the Municipal Administration is to secure the entire area and then, within a short period, reopen Garraffello Square. Given that for decades the historic center of Palermo suffers from neglect and abandonment, and that the promises of municipal governments that have occurred in the postwar period were, for the most part, disregarded, among the people there is a strong skepticism that Garraffello Square is reopened within a short time.
