Air bubble
This is a work related picture. From time to time we investigate new materials and compounds using electron microscopy. Some structures we encounter are of immense beauty, at least that is what I think. What you see here is an resin sample coated with gold. The grains you see are actually tiny gold particles. Trapped in the resin was a pocket of air, which burst upon applying the vacuum needed for the measurement; leaving the structure you can observe in this picture. The magnification in this picture is about 50 000 times. The picture was taken on the 24th of October 2001 at 10.35 am in Auckland, New Zealand. Thanks to Jim and Bryony for letting me use the instrument! The instrument was a Philips FEG scanning electron microscope.

microstrukturen!ganz ungewohnte einblicke. auch wenn ich das alles technisch nicht wirklich verstehe: spannend ist das für mich auf jeden fall!
