Atholl Memorial Fountain

The High Street leads to a place which is named "The Cross" because the former market cross stood here. It was replaced in 1866 with the Atholl Memorial Fountain. It's an impressive fountain with lots of interesting details to look at. You can see a little glimpse of the Ell Shop in the left background and also a glimpse of "The Dutches Anne", where you can visit art exhibitions nowadays. to the right. On my way to the fields, where I've seen the fallow deer yesterday, I didn't walked back and along the main road Atholl Street, whith its Shops and restaurants, but decided, after a (too) quick snapshot of the Atholl memorial, to take the shortcut between the modern Community Archive and the Nationa Trust building. I can highly recommend this archive, especially when the unpredictable scottish weather doesn't suit you well. You can spend hours over hours in here, take a comfortable seat, look at old maps, at family pictures from former decades, and finds of excavations. The staff is extremely kindly and tries to answer all your questions. Gordon found old pictures of his ancestors in a big old black portfolio.
"The Atholl Memorial Fountain was funded by public subscription and built in 1866 ‘to the memory of George Augustus Frederick John 6th Duke of Atholl. The Fountain was funded by public subscription and built in 1866 ‘to the memory of George Augustus Frederick John 6th Duke of Atholl’. The Duke had introduced a piped water supply to Dunkeld, prior to which all water had to be drawn from the River Tay – hence all the wynds leading to the water. The Fountain was designed by C S Robertson and erected on the site of the Market Cross. It replaced a cross that was about 20 feet (6.1 m) high, with four iron jougs attached to it. Several changes are apparent over the years, but there is fine detail in the carvings, which include native animals and birds. Masonic symbols are also incorporated – the 6th Duke was Grand Master Mason of Scotland from 1843 until his death in 1864. Ownership of the Fountain was publicly transferred to the National Trust for Scotland in 1991 in a ceremony conducted by the 10th Duke of Atholl attended by his Atholl Highlanders

The Ell House (now The Ell Shop) is a historic building in Dunkeld. Standing at the corner of High Street and Cathedral Street, near Dunkeld Market Cross, it is a Category B listed building dating to 1757. It was, along with 1 Cathedral Street at its rear, formerly St George's Hospital. The building is so named because it has a weaver's measure (or ell) attached to its exterior.

Unfortunately, I was once again too hectic and accidentally adjusted the focal length from 18 mm to 20 mm when focusing. And so now a small piece of the beautiful fountain is missing above. In the attached picture you can see it completely.
