Bagrati Cathedral, Kutaisi, Georgia (2006)

Georgia's 11th century Bagrati Cathedral was one of the largest places of worship for Orthodox Christians ever built. Largely damaged in 1692 by invading Ottoman Turks, the cathedral became west Georgia's most important ruin, taking a place on UNESCO's list of world heritage sites. In 2012, under the presidency of Mikheil Saakashvili, the cathedral was reconstructed and transformed back into a functioning church, albeit at the cost of its heritage status.
