I very much appreciate the time and effort in the comments here.
Sensors are just a bit of wizardry that allow the camera to work as far as I was concerned but with a little digging have found the info mentioned and it is a bit worrying now :-((((
Banding does occur in a few of my images so now I will look into different processing methods :-))

One more technical infomation about this banding: I read only this morning that it only happens with CCDs not CMOS as image sensors, and true enough, my Epson R-D1 that has the same sensor as your D70 shows it in much the same manner as in this picture, my CMOS-equipped Canon does not.

Interesting :-)))This image was proccessed a lot, more to bring out the foreground to what was just a black space before.
I have spent a fascinating afternoon processing by different means and have a better to up-load when i can again.
