Barnacle Goose

The barnacle goose is a beautiful medium-sized arctic goose with a magnificent plumage that breeds mainly in Greenland, Spitsbergen and Nova Zembla.

In the past, this bird was only a winter visitor in western-Europe.
Since the eighties however breeding colonies were also established here on a regular base.
In Belgium, the first brood was found in 1984.

German name : Weisswangengans (auch Nonnengans genannt)
Latin name : Branta leucopsis

Location : Nature reserve ‘Noordelijk Eiland’ at Wintam (Belgium)
