Castanea sativa world capital
The all granite chapel of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades, at elevation of 800 m, marks both southwestern and lower elevation borders for the Soutos da Lapa heartland, where the best edible chestnut in the world, Martaínha, grows on granite soil, gentle slopes and small plateaus just below 1000 m.
Moving counterclockwise around the valley seen further north from here, the edible chestnut capital of the world covers parts of the counties of Sernancelhe (SE), Trancoso (NW) and Penedono (SW).
