Castle ‘Arenberg’ at Heverlee (Belgium)

In the 12th century, there was already a water castle on this spot but the present castle was built in the beginning of the 16th century.

The architectural style is in large part traditionally Flemish with sandstone window frames and brick walls.
It has been structurally altered in the following centuries with elements of Gothic, Renaissance and Neo Gothic architecture.

2 historical facts : the first theatre of Belgium was founded in the castle in 1616 with performances up to 1913 and the world’s first manned gas-filled balloon flight in history took off from the front lawn of the castle on 21 november 1783.
