Cattle Egret

The cattle egret is a heron species who gained its name from its habit of removing and eating ticks and flies from cattle.

This bird has originated in central Africa and then spread to many other parts of the world during the 19th century as human activities, such as the expansion of agriculture and the cattle industry, created a suitable habitat for this species.

In Belgium however, it’s a seldom spotted visitor.

Location : Nature reserve ‘Noordelijk Eiland’ at Wintam (Belgium)

Dutch name : Koereiger
German name : Kuhreiher
Latin name : Bubulcus ibis
