CHUA VAM RAY #3

The monks at Vam Ray Pagoda eat their food in near silence. Some talk very quietly but the majority just eat.

The vinaya (code of conduct) says that a monk should only eat what is offered to him and he should accept any item without showing pleasure or displeasure. This explains the lack of expression on the monks’ s faces.
The food has been offered by people in the village. The offering of food to the monks is called “dana” and has been the tradition from the days of the Buddha. Every day, the monks walk in the village and are given food.

A “dana” is an act of generosity without the aim of selfish gain or expecting some benefit in return.
