Danger Noodle --- Bothrops asper Garman

Hier das Foto einer Schlange, vor der ich wirklich großen Respekt hatte und der man auf keinen Fall Nachts im Trockenwald von Costa Rica begegnen wollte: Die Terciopelo-Lanzenotter. Diese Art ist in Costa Rica sehr häufig, lebt gerne nahe beim Menschen und ist wie der Mensch meist faul. Nur genau da ist das Problem, dadurch das sie so faul ist, flieht sie nicht wie andere Schlangen, sondern wird aggressiv und zusammen mit dem starken Gift ist sie wohl die relevanteste Schlange in Krankenhäusern Lateinamerikas... Der Biss verursacht Nekrose, Blutgerinnung und meist eine Infektion, kein schöner Gedanke, weshalb ich bei diesem Foto das Maximum meines Zooms verwendet habe um nicht zu nah ran zu müssen... trotzdem bin ich Biologe, ich kann mir nicht helfen aber ich find sie schön!

Here the picture of a snake which actually made me cringe. The pit vipers Bothrops asper. It’s a very abundant snake in the dry-forests of Costa Rica and I really didn’t wanted to stumble upon one when walking through the forest at night time. But I did, luckily on the other side of a little creek. The snake lives close to humans and is as equally lazy. But exactly this is the problem, they do not run away like other snakes, they become aggressive… In combination with the effective venom, the snake is probably the most relevant one in hospitals in Latin America. The bite causes necrosis, hemolysis and infections, not a very pleasant combination…still, I’m a Biologist, I can’t help it but I think they are kind of intriguingly beautiful.
