Dark Giant Horsefly

The dark giant horsefly is the heaviest fly in Europe and lives in boggy areas.

This insect is anautogenous, meaning : it must first take a blood meal before it can lay eggs.
Feeds mainly on the blood of horses, cattle and deer, but it will also bite man in absence of the aforementioned animals.

Dutch name : Paardendaas
German name : Pferdebremse
Latin name : Tabanus sudeticus

My shot shows the insect after landing on the cover of a cookbook that I was using.
