Well - I would say that it is very scottish - planned on a simple grid - of one main street and another street at 90 degrees.
I don't know of any English towns that look like this.

      hi mark,
what i did mean is, if you for example compare penzance in cornwall with dufftown - for me there is a certain likeness .

      Well,
I am always struck by the way things look differently to people from different places.
To me - the scene is foreign and exotic - and it is Scotland.
40 years ago -  I was travelling in southern poland  - when there were not many english people travelling in poland.  An old Polish man asked me where i was from - and was surprised - he expected me to be german.
Anyway - he started to talk to me slowly in german.
He explained through a polish intermediary that the german and english languages were practically the same - and i was bound to understand him.
He was astounded that i (knowing only English) struggled to understand his german words and phrases.
To me they are two different languages - to him they are practically the same.
A Chinese friend of mine - coming from a monoglot country - is always amazed at the variation of languages in Europe - and how different french and italian are from English.
