Emperor dragonfly

This collage shows a female emperor dragonfly during egg laying in a freshwater lake.
Flapping of the wings is used to generate the necessary pressure.

The eggs are deposited on floating water vegetation with a preference for pondweed.
Under water, first nymphs are developped from the eggs and later the actual dragonflies.

It takes 1 to 2 years before a new generation emerges (depending on weather conditions)

Dutch name : Grote Keizerlibel
German name : Grosse Königslibelle
Latin name : Anax imperator
