Grand Canyon sunset

Taken in late March 2008. The viewpoint is along the south rim trail between two of the more popular "near Village" viewing stages, viz. Yavapai Point and Mather Point. Typical of Grand Canyon sunsets, the best thing about the view is not the sun itself as it sinks below the horizon, but its effect on the colors and shadows in the canyon. The long plateau running from the left edge of the photo is the north rim, terminating at Cape Royal. To the right of Cape Royal is a flat-topped butte, 'Wotan's Throne', and to the right of that, a pointed peak, 'Vishnu Temple'.
