Skunk Cabbage (Lysichiton americanus) is an amazing plant. The huge leaves can get up to 135 cm tall, the yellow spathe 30 - 50 cm. It's one
of the first plants to bloom in spring due to it's ability to create it's own heat. The snow would melt around the plant so it can survive. It got it's name because of the skunk-like odor that it emits. In spring you can find fields of skunk cabbages in swamps and wetlands throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Skunk Cabbage (Stinktier-Kohl) ist eine erstaunliche Pflanze. Die riesigen Blätter können bis zu 1,35 m hoch werden, der gelbe Blütenstand 30 - 50cm. Es ist eine der ersten Pflanzen, die im Frühling blühen. Da sie die Fähigkeit haben, ihre eigene Wärme zu erzeugen, schmilzt der Schnee rund um die Pflanze und sie kann überleben. Seinen Namen hat der Skunk Cabbage von seinem stinktierähnlichen Geruch. Im Frühling kann man in Sümpfen und anderen Feuchtgebieten des pazifischen Nordwestens ganze Felder von Skunk Cabbages finden.
