Il MAAM si potrebbe definire come il primo e unico museo abitato al mondo: la sua storia è iniziata a marzo 2009 come occupazione dell’ex fabbrica di salumi e mattatoio Fiorucci da parte di un gruppo di famiglie straniere che rivendicavano il loro diritto all’abitare (oggi convivono in armonia settanta famiglie provenienti da tutto il mondo), con il supporto del gruppo Blocchi Precari Metropolitani.
L’enorme spazio di oltre 20mila metri quadrati era perfetto per risolvere il problema abitativo di queste famiglie, escluse dai diritti e dal supporto dello stato.
Il MAAM è nato come città meticcia, come si sono definiti fin da subito, e quindi un esperimento che unisce e valorizza le diversità.
Nel 2012 questo esperimento è stato “scoperto” dall’antropologo Giorgio De Finis che visitandolo ha deciso, insieme al videomaker Fabrizio Boni, di realizzare un documentario intitolato Space Metropoliz. Dalla realizzazione di questo primo progetto artistico è derivato poi il coinvolgimento di alcuni street artist della scena locale, incaricati dell’allestimento del set. Così Lucamaleonte, Hogre e Gian Maria Tosatti hanno realizzato le prime opere all’interno di Metropoliz.
Dal 2012 hanno iniziato a susseguirsi artisti e creativi che visitando la realtà di questo spazio occupato, hanno scelto di lasciare il proprio segno con l’obiettivo di redimerlo dal suo passato cruento e dare vita ad un nuovo spazio creativo per migliorare prima di tutto la qualità di vita degli abitanti e dei loro bambini permettendogli di giocare liberamente, e in seguito accogliere anche i visitatori.
Nasce così il "Museo dell’Altro e dell’Altrove", un luogo in continua evoluzione, senza vincoli e che celebra la bellezza delle diversità, fondamentali per una città come Roma.
Nel caso del MAAM si può dire a tutti gli effetti che lo spazio e l’arte si sono salvati reciprocamente, creando un circolo virtuoso difficile da percepire, se non si visita in prima persona.

MAAM was born as a mestizo city, as they defined themselves right from the start, and therefore an experiment that unites and enhances diversity.
In 2012 this experiment was "discovered" by the anthropologist Giorgio De Finis who, visiting it, decided, together with the videomaker Fabrizio Boni, to make a documentary entitled Space Metropoliz. The involvement of some street artists from the local scene, in charge of setting up the set, resulted from the realization of this first artistic project. Thus Lucamaleonte, Hogre and Gian Maria Tosatti created the first works within Metropoliz.
Since 2012, artists and creatives have begun to follow one another who, visiting the reality of this occupied space, have chosen to leave their mark with the aim of redeeming it from its bloody past and giving life to a new creative space to improve quality first and foremost. of life of the inhabitants and their children allowing them to play freely, and later to welcome visitors as well.
Thus was born the "Museum of the Other and the Elsewhere", a place in constant evolution, without constraints and which celebrates the beauty of diversity, fundamental for a city like Rome.
In the case of the MAAM, it can be said to all intents and purposes that space and art have saved each other, creating a virtuous circle that is difficult to perceive, if you do not visit it in person.
