Sarakiniko coast on Melos island

Melos is one of the most beautiful islands in the Cykladean complex. One of the most interesting sites to visit on it is the really exquisite Sarakiniko beach situated on the north shore of the island. Multiple volcanic eruptions through the ages together with ferocious waves from the strong northwinds have virtually disfigured this part of the coast creating gigantic white and bare rocks of various shapes often compared to a moonscape. For ages these rocks served as safe refuge to pirates and in the 50's and 60's a meeting point for the beat and hippies movements.

To me this strange site, apart from inummerable provocations for photography, offered me also a good chance to think how minute and insignificant sometimes the human scale appears among nature's grandeur and supremacy....
In any case Sarakiniko remains the most photographed site in Aegean Sea.
