Monk outside the Wat Phou Salao

The friendly monk explained to us the monkshood and daily routine for monks in Laos:

A monk may be a person who decides to dedicate their life to serving other people and serving God, or to be an ascetic who voluntarily chooses to leave mainstream society and live their life in prayer and contemplation.
The common way for young Laotian men is for them to enter the monkhood at around 14 years and stay as monks into early adult life, at which point they leave to take up paid employment and raise families of their own.
