Zagorochoria villages

Zagorochoria villages perched along the mountainous ridge of Pindos have always been a place of tradition and history. Even during the miserable four hundred years of Ottoman occupation the villages enjoyed a remarcable degree of independence and autonomy due to their remote location thus developping a high level of cultural and economic activity reflected not only to their vicinity but also abroad. Famous builders carrying the art of masonry from father to son left their valuable architectural traces on pebble paved roads. handmade bridges still present, houses, roofs, chimneys and craft tools of everyday use raising their area to a highly respected degree of local and traditional civilization. Beautiful churches also decorate the place with mosaics and frescoes.
In present days, the villages of Zagori, easily accesible by roads are frquently visited throughout the year with people enjoying nature, rivers and winter sports.
In the photo one of the villages located deeply in the valley with the imposing mountainous bulk high in the distance and a long way snaky road leading to it.
