Neugierige Blicke

Over centuries, Jeddah has always been a main trade and commercial centre along the Red Sea Coast.

The glory of former times can still be discovered in the old town of Jeddah. Tower houses made of coral lime stone, palm tree trunks and adobe dominate an area of approx. 2 sqm.

Today, parts of the old houses - mostly without air condition - are taken up by immigrant families. The telephone lines are erratic and need a lot of ingenuity to be kept working.

The little boy in the picture was oblivious to all that. He greeted merrily from behind the window and waved happily. His smile was heart-touching.

Scenes like this make the old town of Jeddah such an interesting and lively melting pot of cultures.

I enjoy going back there every time.
