Public Puputan street festival

The word ‘puputan’ is a Balinese word that means ‘a ritual war to death’. The Taman Puputan also hosts yearly celebrations to commemorate the fight against the colonialists. There are also warrior statues located here that reflect the warrior’s spirit to fight kompeni.
Every year in October pupils and students from Balinese schools are dancing on the Puputan square as a memoral to the mass ritual suicide occurred in 1906 and 1908, when the Balinese were being subjugated by the Dutch.
