Demerest Building

Warwick, New York

The Demerest Building Demerest Hall / Location: Railroad Ave. / Hotel built in 1865 by Thomas Demerest, later a large recreation hall was added. Famous for applejack, served at a huge wooden bar. Balls and dances as well as lectures were held here, and it became the social and cultural center of the village. The wooden hotel burned in 1887, shortly after it was sold. Tom Demerest repurchased the property and built a larger, more elegant brick hotel with gas lights. Its elegant bar room rivalled the finest in New York City.
