Ruddy Shelduck (immature)
There’s still a discussion going on whether the ruddy shelduck is a duck-like goose or a goose-like duck.
Anyhow, it’s a striking migratory waterbird, breeding in southeastern Europe & central Asia and wintering in the Indian subcontinent.
A few dozens of ruddy shelducks stay in Belgium. Every year there are also some breeding cases where it is not always clear whether they are real wild birds or ducks that have escaped from captivity.
Dutch name : Roestgans (ook Casarca genoemd)
German name : Rostgans
Latin name : Tadorna ferruginea
(immature is the stage between juvenile and adult)
