According to the Standard Locomotive Headlamp code, group 3, the signs indicate a train for express freight or ballast, authorized to run at a maximum speed of 35 mph or empty coaching stock not carrying headlamps for group #1(Express passenger train or empty coaching stock).
Well, however, a good shot of a southern freight and mixed traffic engine in splendour!
Again, the Z6 does a splendid job!
S15 #847 is the last of a batch of 45 Maunsell engines built in 1936, originally built for working the heaviest freights on the Western section of the Southern region.
Judged by "continental standards" these would be classified more as light passenger engines, maybe comparable with the german class 38 or french tenwheelers...

A handsome and succesful class of locomotive. Maunsell was actually Irish (born in Dublin) and worked in Inchicore becoming superintendent before moving to the Southern railway. Nice to see that engine running - only comes out at peak season due to coal demands

Hallo Finnie, englische Eisenbahnen sind immer sehenswert, wobei besonders die Lokomotiven durch ihre Schnörckellosigkeit glänzen.
