Smokey Quartz crystals in Granite
While exploring an old plane wreck scattered between the huge granite boulders that line the edges of Matterhorn Canyon (a place which you can see in another photo of mine posted earlier), I made an exciting discovery - a very specific pattern of quartz vein in the granite. I had seen it before and knew that such veins often contained beautiful crystal formations of black quartz. With my focus shifted from the wreckage to the stones surrounding me, I found several exquisite examples. The largest crystal in focus in this particular image is about the length of my thumb protruding out of a crevice about the size of my two fists. With the sun newly set behind the high walls of the canyon, I had lovely soft light to photograph a very lucky find.
