Square Almeida Garrett

Square Almeida Garrett

The Square Almeida Garrett already took many names as, for example, a Yard of S. Blessed, Square of the Market of S. Blessed, Wide of S. Benedictine monk of Avé Maria, between others and therefore the fact is that the Persons from Oporto rarely call Almeida Garrett a Square. The usual thing is they refer to the square simply like “Near S. Blessed” or “in front of S. Blessed”.
Almeida Garrett was born in Oporto (by the way well near to the square with his name) in 1799 and new much left still for the Azores, where the family took refuge of the French invasions. It was there what developed his religious and literary facet, through friar Alexandre of the sacred family, his uncle and also it poetizes.
In 1816 he returned to the continent to begin straight in the University of Inhabitant of Coimbra.
Between his most known works there are the poem “Camões“, ”White Lady,” “A Car of Gil Vicente”, “Frei Luís of Sousa” and in 1854 before dying, it published “Travels in My Land”, “Fallen Leaves”, between many people others.
